5 Biblical Truths to Remember When You Feel Unloved

Red paper heart ripped in two represents feeling unloved

Feeling unloved is a difficult and painful part of the human experience. Most of us will struggle with feelings of rejection, abandonment, and loneliness at least once in our lives. Despite this, we can take heart in the biblical truth that we are always loved by God. We serve a Heavenly Father who saw us at our worst and still loved us enough to save us from our sin, death, and shame. He did all of this through Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross so that we could be in an eternal relationship with Him as His children.

Are you feeling unloved today? If so, here are five biblical truths about God’s love to encourage you:

Truth #1: You Can Never be Separated from God’s Love

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,  will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

When you feel unloved, you can rest in the truth that God’s love is steadfast. Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that we can never be separated from the love of God. While you may feel unloved, you are not unloved. Instead, you are loved greatly by God and the Bible frequently reminds us of this truth.

In fact, we are blessed to be loved by God because He is both omniscient and all powerful. That means that He can use every ounce of His abilities to insure that nothing can keep us having a relationship with Him except our own unwillingness to love and obey Him. Through the Bible, we see God overcome sin, resist the devil, and defeat the grave just to be in a relationship with us.

Truth #2: God’s Love is Unconditional

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Another biblical truth about God’s love is that it’s unconditional. Romans 5:8 reminds us that God loved us while we were sinners. This means that God’s love isn’t dependent on us being perfect. Instead, unconditional love is a redemptive kind of love because it is a love rooted in forgiveness, grace, and mercy. Because God loves us unconditionally, it doesn’t matter what we’ve done in the past. Thanks to Jesus, who died for our sin, we can be in a loving relationship with God as long as we repent of our sins and turn to Him.

When you feel unloved, remember that God loves you dearly. His love is unconditional and unwavering. God’s unconditional love doesn’t mean that we can keep intentionally sinning. However, it does mean that God is willing to forgive us and give us a fresh start with Him. We can come to Him with all of our flaws and know that we will be accepted.

Truth #3: When Feeling Unloved, Remember God’s Love is a Gift

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:10)

God loves us freely. His doesn’t force us to earn His love. His love is not a response to our affection for Him. Instead, He loved us first and was even willing to send His Son to rescue us from our sin. Even before we accepted God’s love, He loved us! This means that His love is not something that we have earned. It is a free gift.

If you’re feeling unloved today, please be encouraged by the truth that God loves you freely. You don’t have to perform for God’s love. He doesn’t love you based on your good deeds or reputation. Instead, He simply loves you.

Truth #4: His Love is Greater than You Think

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. (Deuteronomy 7:9)

God’s love is that it’s even greater than we can imagine. In the Bible, God often refers to His love as a covenant. When we think of a covenant type of relationship, the closest comparison we have in today’s world is a marriage. This means that God loves us with the kind of devotion that a husband has for his wife. He desires to do life with us daily, for us to know Him personally, and to reveal Himself to us through the Bible. Lastly, He is always trying to protect us and do what’s best for us (Romans 8:28).

If you’re feeling unloved, know that God’s love for you is greater than you think. He is always working for your good. He desires to be close to you. And most importantly, His love is for you is eternal. It will never fade!

Truth #5: It is a Part of His Character

I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. (Jeremiah 31:3)

The Bible tells us that God is love, and His very nature is loving. According to 1 Corinthians 13:4-8:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

This is how the Bible defines love and, as we grow in our relationship with Him, we’ll find that God’s character lines up with this definition. He is patient with us and our sin. He sent Jesus to humbly die for us for our benefit. And lastly, He is constantly forgiving us, protecting us, and persevering in love for us. In these ways, God personifies love.

Knowing that God is love should encourage us when we feel unloved. This biblical truth remind us that we can rely on His love as part of His unchanging nature. He will always love us simply because love is a part of His character.
