Father, Help Me to Have a Heart to Hear You

I love recipes with simple ingredients. I’m often busy at work, and I love being able to make quick and easy meals that don’t require too much fuss. I also like cooking with common ingredients that I’ll be able to use in multiple meals with ease. In my walk of faith, I’ve found that hearing from God also requires a few simple “ingredients.” These ingredients are an open and humble heart, a willingness to serve or obey, a love for righteous living, and a persistent desire to hear God. When these heart attitudes are present, I find it easiest to hear from God.

One of my favorite illustrations of this comes from the book of 1 Samuel chapter 3. A young Samuel is just learning to hear the voice of God. Mistaking the high priest Eli for God, Samuel rushes to serve him. He is humble and takes the job of ministering before God seriously.  Samuel’s story shows us that we don’t have to be perfect, wise, or popular to hear from God. We simply have to have the right attitude in our hearts. This isn’t to say that God could never speak to us if we are out of alignment with these heart attitudes. Throughout the Bible we see that God can speak to those who choose not to follow Him, like a Pharaoh in Egypt (2 Chronicles 35:20-27). Instead, what I’m trying to say is that, when we have the right heart attitude, it is easier for us to hear Him.

As we pray this week, let’s ask God to help us develop a heart attitude that makes it easier for us to hear from Him.

Prayer of the Week: Asking for a Heart to Hear God

Dear Father, I desire to hear your voice. Help me to have a heart to hear you like Samuel, a heart that is humble, obedient, and upright. Father God, your word says, “create in me a clean heart, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Please change my heart posture towards you so that I can better hear your voice. If there is anything in my heart that is keeping me from deepening my relationship with you, please show me. Lord, I thank you that you show your grace to those who are humble (Proverbs 3:34). I humbly come to you, Lord. Help me to have a heart to hear you, dear God. I pray this in Jesus name. Amen!
