In this devotional, we’ll journey through Job’s story—his loss, faith, and restoration—to uncover the beautiful truth that God’s presence is our greatest blessing.

Scripture Focus: The Blessing of God’s Presence
‘“How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me, when His lamp shone on my head and by His light I walked through darkness! Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house, when the Almighty was still with me and my children were around me, when my path was drenched with cream and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil.”’
Believe: Read Job 29:2-6. In what ways is God’s presence a blessing according to this scripture?
Discontentment Hides God’s Blessings
Have you ever felt so unhappy that it discolored your view of life? Like mildew, this feeling of unhappiness started to overtake my perspective a few years ago.
I lived in a fairly peaceful suburb of New Orleans. My library job was fulfilling and comfortingly predictable. I went on short trips during summers and Christmases were full of family, comfort food, and love. Get-togethers at church and with friends rounded out my safe and comfortable life. Yet, I was deeply unhappy, and I didn’t know why.
Overtime, the Holy Spirit graciously revealed this truth—I felt stagnant. I’d applied for job opportunities I didn’t receive. Relationships I’d emotionally invested in crumbled. Resentment began to color my perspective.
Reflect: Have you ever gone through a period of feeling dissatisfied in your faith? What contributed to those feelings? Honestly reflect on how you’re feeling right now.
The Book of Job: What It Means to be Blessed
Eager to find some truth to battle my growing resentment, I started reading the book of Job early in the mornings. As soon as my alarm sounded, I’d pop open my eyes, pull my Bible off the nightstand onto my pillow, and consume each word with the hope that Job’s story would speak to me.
Job’s Story of Suffering and Blessing
The book of Job is mostly associated with suffering, loss, and God’s justice. Job is a faithful man of standing in his community. He is a family man, respected leader, and wealthy landowner (Job 1:1-3, Job 29:7-17).
During the course of his life, he suffers through great tragedy due to spiritual warfare—his children die suddenly, he loses all of his wealth, and he later suffers illness (Job 1 and 2). Job is mocked and rejected by his community while undergoing these trials (Job 16:10-11). Even his wife and his closest friends offer little to no comfort (Job 2:9-10, Job 12:4).
In the end, God speaks to Job and restores his family, wealth, and standing in the community. Through his hardships, Job develops a deeper relationship with God and a better understanding of His sovereignty.
Invite: Job 42:12-17 tells us that God blessed Job with a full life. He gained twice as much wealth and lived to see four generations of his descendants. Take this time to pray that you would experience God’s fullness for your life.
What Does Job’s Story Have to Do with a Blessed Life?
Throughout the book of Job, it’s not the loss of his wealth or standing that bothers Job the most. It’s his feeling that, somehow, he’s lost his intimate connection with the Lord. In Job 29:4, he says:
‘“Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house.”’
This verse illuminates Job’s longing for God’s friendship in this season of suffering. When the Lord begins to speak in chapter 38, Job puts his hand over his mouth (Job 40:3-5) as a sign of respect to God and listens despite previously complaining that he would like to defend his righteousness before God. This illustrates that Job is more interested in hearing from God than pleading for his innocence.
Lastly, even though God never gives Job a reason for his suffering, Job quickly repents for doubting God’s character. In Job 42:5-6, he says:
‘“My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”
In this verse, we see that Job’s experience with God and reaction to Him serves to deepen his relationship with God. He’s not only spoken to God but sat in His presence and seen Him.
By the end of the book, God doubles Job’s wealth and renews his standing in his community. Yet, the most valuable things Job received from his conversation with God was a greater understanding of God’s justice, sovereignty, and love; a personal interaction with His loving Heavenly Father; and a more resilient faith.

Job’s Lesson: God’s Presence is the Blessing
Job’s story teaches us that living the blessed life is not about acquiring money or influence. Truly living a blessed life is about living a life in which we see God. It’s a life of being in His presence daily, serving Him with our time and talents, and trusting Him through difficulties and trials.
When we, like Job, see the Lord by deepening our relationship with Him, we find true contentment, joy, and purpose, even when life is hard. This is because we have a soul deep need for God that nothing else can satisfy. In Job’s case, he had everything he could ever want. Yet, when he lost it all, what he wanted most was to be in God’s presence.

Letting Go of Resentment, Holding onto God’s Presence
Resentment and bitterness had begun to form a film over my perspective about life and God. So, I grieved, repented, and gave my frustrations to Him. The first thing I felt wasn’t relief or elation. It was fear. Letting go meant trusting God with the direction of my life, even when I didn’t understand what He was doing. Yet, overtime, God calmed my fears by reminding me of His love. Slowly, my perspective began to change. Instead of unfulfilled desires, I began to see evidence of God’s blessings, grace, and kindness in my life. Instead of feeling resentment, I felt content.
Final Encouragement: The Blessing of God’s Presence
Living a blessed life starts with acknowledging this simple truth—God’s presence touches every aspect of our lives. Our purpose, peace, and joy comes from Him. Every good thing we have comes from Him. We were designed to be in an intimate loving relationship with Him, and nothing else can ever meet this need.
When we, like Job, choose to live a life of seeing God, we receive a blessing more valuable than gold and more rewarding than any influence—a life colored by God’s grace, mercy, and love.
Key Takeaways on Living a Blessed Life Through God’s Presence:
- God’s presence is the true blessing. Like Job, our greatest joy is found not in possessions but in intimacy with the Lord (Job 29:4)
- Trials can draw us closer to God. Even in suffering, we can experience His faithfulness and grow in understanding of His character (Job 42:5–6)
- Resentment blinds us to grace. When we surrender our frustrations, we make room for peace and gratitude to flourish (Philippians 4:6–7)
- A blessed life is a life of faith. Trusting God through every circumstance leads to lasting contentment (Psalm 16:11)
