6 Bible Verses that Tell Us to Study God’s Word
There are many verses in the Bible that tell us to read and study the Bible. While the word Bible isn’t in the actual Bible, we can find verses that describe the Bible as God’s Word and tell us to read, memorize, and study His Word. A few of them are below!
Bible Verses About Studying the Bible
Psalm 119: 9-11
How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
According to this beautiful psalm, studying the Bible helps us to avoid sin and live a life of purity for God.
Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Jesus speaks these words as He resists one of the devil’s temptations while fasting in the wilderness. This verse is such a great reminder that we are to read God’s Word because it is spiritually life giving. Only God’s Word can truly satisfy spiritual hunger.
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Not only are we to study the Bible for ourselves, but we are called to share the Word with others and help our brothers and sisters in Christ by advising them with the Word when it’s needed.
We are Called to Study and Respond to the Bible
James 1:22-25
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
The Bible tells us to read God’s Word in order to be doers of God’s Word. When we expose ourselves to the Word of God, it changes us. This requires us to take an honest look at ourselves and respond to God’s Word when necessary. It also requires perseverance as it takes effort to change. Lastly, actively aligning our lives with the Bible brings God’s promised blessings.
Joshua 1:8
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
The Bible tells us to the meditate on God’s Word often. This is another verse that tell us that we should do what the Bible says. It also promises a blessing for those who read and act on God’s Word.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
The Bible is transformative. It reveals any hidden motives and intentions that we may have in our hearts. As we study the Bible, we’ll be challenged to live holy lives that ultimately bring us closer to God.
In Conclusion
These are just a few verses from the Bible that tell us to study the Bible. While we won’t find the word Bible in the Bible, it’s easy to see that we are encouraged to pursue not just studying the Bible, but doing what the Bible says.
