A Mother’s Love: Celebrating Mother’s Day 2025 with an Isaiah 49 Devotional

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”
A Mother’s Deep Love and Sacrifice
My mother loved me long before I was born. When an OBGYN told her that she would never have children, she was devastated. On her bus ride home, she cried hysterically, so overcome by grief that she didn’t notice the stares of other passengers or how they avoided her.
She could have given up. Instead, she prayed. God blessed her with the wisdom to seek a second opinion. Her new OBGYN offered hope. She could have children but it would require sacrifice. My mother wasn’t deterred, and she committed to doing whatever her new doctor advised. She exercised regularly, committed to eating a pescatarian diet, and faithfully attended her appointments.

A Mother’s Miracle
On Thanksgiving day in 1987, I was born. That day, my mother also saved my life. She had grown used to talking to me each morning while I was in the womb. That morning, she noticed that I hadn’t moved or kicked in her womb at the sound of her voice. Concerned, she rushed to the hospital where doctors performed an emergency c-section.
I was born premature, severely underweight, and with a hole in my stomach. Her doctor told her to prepare for the worst. My mother prayed for the best. I recovered fully and now live a happy and healthy life as a full grown adult. God answered my mother when she cried out to Him, and I’m happy to say that I’m living proof of her earnest prayers and fierce love.
A Mother’s Love Reflects God’s Greater Love
A mother’s love is uniquely beautiful. It is also a portrait of an even greater love. Isaiah 49:15 says:
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”
This verse reminds us that God loves us extravagantly. His eternal love rivals even a mother’s love in its fierceness, faithfulness, and beauty. God’s love has withstood sin, betrayal, and pain. He loves us so much that He bears the mark of His love on His very hands (John 20:24-27).

Celebrating Mothers and God’s Unfailing Love
Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day 2025, let us remember the women in our lives who have loved us with a mother’s love. Let us also be reminded of the God in whose image they were made. May the power of a mother’s love encourage us into deeper relationship with our loving God whose love is eternal, fierce, and unfailing.
Happy Mother’s Day 2025!
Key Takeaways for a Mother’s Love Devotional:
- God’s love surpasses even the greatest human love. While a mother’s love is extraordinary, God’s love is even greater—unfailing, eternal, and fierce
- Jesus bears the marks His love for us. Just as a mother’s actions visibly demonstrate love, God’s love was made visible through the scars Jesus bears for our salvation (John 20:24-27)
- Mother’s Day 2025 is a chance to celebrate both earthly and divine love. As we honor mothers, we are also reminded of the perfect love of God, who created and empowered them to love so deeply
A Prayer for Mother’s Day 2025
Thank you, Father, for the women in my life who have loved me with a mother’s love. Thank you, Jesus, for the love you have shown me at the cross. Your love is eternal, fierce, and unfailing, and I’m so thankful that your love for me is beyond my wildest comprehension. Help me to never forget the love you have for me as I celebrate the women in my life who were made in your image. In Jesus name, amen!
