God’s Answer to a Small Prayer in a Grocery Store

Walking into the grocery store, I had one goal—buy a healthy snack. On my way inside, I did something that I didn’t normally do. I said a short prayer. Just a few words uttered in a whisper before passing through the automatic doors.

Would God hear my small prayer? I felt confident when praying for big things—financial break through, healing, or favor for a job interview. These were things that I knew required a big God and I trusted Him with them. Praying for little things? I shuffled into the grocery store awkwardly, hoping that no one noticed my whispers and mistook them for me speaking to myself.

I was inspired by a friend to pray before entering the store. We were eating lunch together a few days earlier when she shared that she prays before going to buy clothes. When she walks into a store, she prays then takes a look around. If she finds a few things she likes on the first few racks, she knows God heard her prayers. She’ll shop and find affordable clothes that suit her. If she doesn’t find anything quickly, she knows that she won’t find anything that day and leaves.

Having nothing to lose, I decided to try my friend’s prayer strategy. Perhaps, God would help me in my quest to create a healthier lifestyle. As I walked into the store, something strange happened. An item in the produce section caught my eye. I was captivated because I couldn’t quite make it out. As a drew closer, I realized it was a snack sized charcuterie pack with cheese, apples, pretzels, and grapes. God heard my prayer!

My friend’s wisdom helped me to start praying to God for small things.

Why Do Short Everyday Prayers Matter to God?

Throughout the Bible, we see examples of short everyday prayers. In the book of Numbers, Aaron, the priest, prayed a simple prayer for God’s blessing and favor (Numbers 6:24-26). Nehemiah prayed a short prayer for God to bless his conversation with the Persian king. Paul prayed for joy, peace, and hope for Christians in Rome (Romans 15:13). And, of course, Jesus demonstrated how to pray for our everyday needs through the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13).

These prayers from the Bible are examples of small prayers that work. They show us that prayer isn’t just for desperate moments and life changing crises. They remind us that prayer doesn’t have to be an elaborate jumble of fancy words. Instead, prayer can be an opportunity for us to invite our extraordinary God into the ordinary moments of our lives.

This truth is illustrated in 1 Peter 5:7 which says, “cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” In this passage, the Apostle Peter reminds us that our small daily worries are not a nuisance to God because He loves us. In fact, our Heavenly Father wants us to invite Him into the most intimate parts of our day. According to Psalm 37:23 (NLT), we serve a God who delights in us and desires to touch every moment of our lives.
