“This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance. For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel. On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.”

Exodus 12:14-16

A Spring 2025 Devotional and Prayer to Refresh Your Faith

Every spring in Louisiana, we have termite season. These little critters swarm around streetlights and infiltrate homes for about two to three weeks. After they’ve finished swarming, there’s the cleanup. No matter how neat and clean we are during the swarming period, termites get into everything. Naturally, that means we have to clean out every cupboard and corner in order to rid ourselves of these pests.

Personally, I hate cleaning up after termite season, however, I always feel very accomplished afterwards. It’s nice to know that my home has been thoroughly cleaned.

The Israelites Prepare for the Passover

The people of Israel also had their own sort of “spring cleaning.” In the month of March, they observed the Passover (Exodus 12:14-20). It was a special celebration that reminded them of how God freed them from Egyptian slavery. It required them to discard any yeast or products made with yeast, such as wine, from their homes. They were to eat unleavened bread for seven days, give offerings to the Lord, and partake in a national assembly on the first and seventh day.

The Passover required the Israelites to take stock of their daily lives and homes. They did this to clean out anything that would be offensive to God for the duration of the feast. Doing so helped them to prepare their hearts to draw near to God as they remembered God’s goodness to their ancestors and celebrated His faithfulness towards them.

Our Spiritual Spring Cleaning

In a similar way, we too, need to conduct a spiritual “spring cleaning.” Just like the Israelites, we can find time to take stock of our lives, clean up sinful habits, and refresh our faith using God’s Word. As we assess our lives, we can invite the Holy Spirit into the process. We can ask Him to help us transform to be more like Christ.

In this way, we can offer ourselves up to the Lord and prepare to draw even closer to Him as we remember His goodness and faithfulness to us.

Key Takeaways for Refresh Your Faith, a Spring 2025 Devotional:

  • Intentional reflection is required to refresh our faith. Just like the Israelites cleaned their homes, we must be willing to examine our hearts and remove what doesn’t honor God
  • We can turn to God as we conduct our own spiritual spring cleaning. We can invite the Holy Spirit into the process and seek instruction in God’s Word
  • By taking stock of our lives, we can draw near to God. Assessing our faith not only allows us to address old habits and hidden sin, it also gives us an opportunity to reflect on God’s goodness and faithfulness

A Prayer for Our Own Spiritual Spring Cleaning

Father God, we thank you for your faithfulness and goodness. Help us to refresh our faith through your Word and the Holy Spirit. Bring to light any sin habits that are keeping us from drawing closer to you and empower us through your Spirit to put away these sins.

Father, we ask you to transform us further into the likeness of Christ. Show us what next steps we can take to honor you. We thank you for the grace and favor you’ve given us over the years. Please encourage us in our faith, Father. Continue to speak into our lives and remind us of your faithful love. In Jesus name, amen!
